Heino Why The Caged Bird Sings

Don your best pair of lederhosen, fill your favorite stein, and give a warm round of applause for Heino. An uberstar for the last 40 years in Germany, he’s outsold The Beatles, and like Elvis, has spawned an industry of impersonators. Outside of his homeland, he seems to garner more laughter than respect. I’m not sure why. Perhaps it’s his resemblance to a pasty white alien in Warhol disguise, with crazy eyes hidden beneath rectangular sunglasses and an albino-like wig perched atop his head. Or perhaps it’s because his name sounds somewhat like an informal term for a person’s buttocks. Either way, I’ve been playing the hell out of all four sides of this sailor song LP all week. And, more strangely, I can’t stop looking at him on the album cover while listening.

HEINO! I always thought he looked like Christopher Walken in "A View To A Kill." Nice post, dood.

I've searched the net for Heino for a long time, and finally! Thanks!

No chance for more?

Hi,
I've been a Heino, I don't what to say--fan?--for years. About a decade ago a bunch of cacophonists in LA convinced a German radio host there was a cult of Heino in LA, and we did a radio broadcast that aired over there--apparently he commented on it, and said he was going to rethink playing US shows... for years, he'd play at Alpine Village in Torrance, CA (also notable as the one-time meeting place of the local American Nazi party, til they got kicked out) Anyway, a few years ago I asked Jello Biafra why the hell he wasn't coming to Cali anymore, and he said it was because there were more German retirees in Florida and he was playing a yearly show there. Dammit. A friend of mine just returned from Berlin and I asked him to pick up some Heino for me, all my viynl having been stolen, and he said the hipster indie record clerk looked at him like he was retarded. Heino was like Germany's Elvis; he brought back the traditional German marching songs which the Nazis had appropriated... anyhow, what else can I say? He supposedly bought the eyeglass manufacturer who makes his shades so no one else in the world would have the same frames... never heard anything bad about him, though, he used to have a variety show in Germany, and there's a great duet he did with Nina Hagen on youtube...

NoMeansNo alter-egos, the Hanson Brothers, have a great song called, "You Can't Hide The Heino" that is really worth a listen.
