Tomorrow's Sound Yesterday

:: The Album (Zipped) ::

So anyway, and then there was the dawn of Symphonopop, a phrase so
catchy the music it represented couldn't help becoming the next big
thing. Or at least that's what the over the top liner notes from this
album would have you believe. So sure was RCA of Jonna Gault's
impending success, they spared no adjectives in a futile attempt to
sell America on this talented young lady. But alas, it was not meant
to be.

Whether you like her Broadway meets Pet Sounds approach or not, you
have to give her credit for trying something a bit different. And in
my case, I can't help but to feel a bit sorry for her because I'm sure
she thought she was going to be a music legend by the time she was 25,
but it was not to be. After this, her debut album in 1968, she was
rarely heard from again. Yet today you have to look at the fact that
this young woman made this rather grand statement, producing and
arranging in a time when women just didn't do stuff like that. As the
liner notes rave:

"This album was created especially for the demands of stereophonic
listening. The intricate task of 8-track A & R-ing and mixing was
accomplished with such flare and finesse that one finds it utterly
amazing that the creator is a girl barely in her 20s."

Indeed. Girl, uh, Jonna, if you're out there, we salute you.

Mike

Jonna sounds like a french ya-ya singer, if you can imagine one which sings in English. This is beyond awful. She has just enough talent to muddle through the songs. The 9th song sounds like it
was recorded by the munchkins from the wizard of oz, per the double-tracked vocals....this may be the worst record I've ever heard, and I've heard many bad records, from thrifts to public libraries...from bad hootenanny to shatner and uriah heep........this has no redeeming quality whatsoever....not even fun-bad...and it says she is in her early 20's, yet she has the voice of a 40-year-old woman approaching
her changes....Nancy Sinatra is
Joni Mitchell compared to this chick.......and oohhhhh, those baddddd beatles and beach boys covers....sounds like a pregnant
cow caught in a pig trough.....really white sounding....so lily-white sounding
that she makes up with people sound like Public Enemy....makes
simon and garfunkle sound like sam and dave.....makes Bread sound like
rage against the machine......
all copies still in existance should be burned immediately....

Aw come on, tell us how you reall feel.

I agree she has a weak voice, but I would have advised her to move east and work in musical theatre not as a performer, but arranger/composer. And I agree that "Shadrack" should be burned, but doesn't "Wonder Why, I Guess?" tickle you just a little bit?

Mike, your blog is awesome...I'm the one that just posted that diatribe...and I don't think "Shadrack" should be burned... I actually got a kick out of "Shadrack", though I'm waiting for my
new shipment of psilocybin mushrooms to arrive before I appreciate Shad and the others to
the fullest. This is an album much like Love's "Forever Changes", which sounds awful straight, but with the proper mind-altering hallucinagens sounds like Sgt. Pepper. I'm going to try to spread "Shadrack" around Austin, tex.(not kidding). prob the strangest song I've ever heard.
Are meshack and shadrack actually biblical characters, or do they only reside in Jonna's imagination? Don't you love the "Meeshack a baby rack" line?
We can prob work shadrack into some local theater productions here
Also love that fourth song, the dobbie doobie day, dobba dobba one,
or whatever she's saying. What is the lovely Jonna doing nowadays?
As she would be about 61, I would think she is either an artist living out in Monterrey with a local gallery, or in a mental institution somewhere.
Actually I just listened to it for the second time and am liking it
a bit. That this has occured frightens me.

Thanks very much.

This is actually one of my favourite ever albums - I picked it up for pennies back in around 1977 here in the UK at a store called Tandy (Radio Shack in the US) who didn't normally sell records! I had no idea who she was or that I'd love it all these years later - the orchestration and passion on "Shadrack" is amazing and how "Here we are" hasn't become a standard, I just don't know. One of these days I'll burn it to CD - it's VERY well played though!

Oh by the way, hello Scott - you asked about Shadrack... it was originally (and still is)a highly-venerated spiritual song, usually performed by a rombustuous male-voice choir; Jonna re-arranged and wrote new sections of the melody.

I tried your download link but it won't work for me...... So it's back to the vinyl copy!

I *must* disagree with the anti-Jonna Gault commentators here, if only because of "Jack and Jill" - a compelling, brilliantly produced song that shows what she was capable of. Very Spectorish, with swirling violins and Jonna's commanding vocals. There's also something poignant about this album, enhanced by the fact that she seems to have vanished from the earth after it failed.

I found this album back in the late 80's and had high hopes for it, only to be somewhat disappointed on listening to it. However, it did grow on me on repeated listenings. The liner notes mention and praise a song called "What If They Gave a War and No One Came" which to my chagrin was not on the album for some reason. I was lucky enough to find the 45 of "What If..." several years later and it proved to be an excellent anti-war song that was better than the songs on the LP. For that reason I give Jonna a thumbs up!

Anyone interested in sampling Gault's music can find several of her songs on YouTube.

As for whatever happened to her, Gault gave quite an extensive interview in 1982 in connection with the debut of a musical that she wrote called "Walls". The article indicated that it was "Broadway-bound" but apparently never made it that far. Anyway, the article gives lots of details about her abbreviated recording career and enough biographical detail to trace her present whereabouts (which I was not inclined to do).

If the following link doesn't work, just google: "Jonna Gault" "Walls"
